Just after Christmas wine sellers announce all manner of sales – some are hoping to sell through excess stock or increase their ‘celebration’ purchase by encouraging our purchases of sparkling wines for New Year. Others will come in January that will be more about reducing stock holding and clearing through wines that have either not performed in the way the seller would have liked or that just need to be drunk up.
I spotted a note about Waitrose Champagne and Sparkling wine sale for New Year on my timeline this morning so thought I’d note down some suggestions from their list.
Nyetimber Classic Cuvee – £23.99 – outstanding price for this lovely wine from one of England’s premier sparkling wine producers. A great way to say non to Champagne.
Ayala Brut Majeur NV £19.99 – less than £20 for a serious, refreshing fruit forward Grande Marque Champagne. It’s low dosage means that it’s really food friendly – if you are having anything from the sea this is what to partner with it. And at this price I’d buy some and drink it over the next 2-3 years.
Laurent Perrier Brut NV £24.99 – I used to think this wasn’t very interesting Champagne – but I was missing the point – the finesse and elegance here can hide the subtlety that this definitely has. At less than £25 it’s a bargain.
Pol Roger Vintage Brut 2004 £44.99 – My desert island Champagne at an absolutely outstanding price. Deep rich and seriously ageworthy stock up and buy as much as you can afford this is a no brainer.
