So this is not quite the same as my normal top 10 – instead this is a list of wines that I haven’t yet had the opportunity to taste, and in most cases I doubt very much that I will get to taste. It is largely a conservative list of the great old names of wine rather than anything cutting edge. If you like they are predominantly the wines against which all other wines will be judged.
The rules – one wine per person, no more than two per region and I must never have (knowingly) tasted the wine from any vintage before.
1. Krug Clos de Mesnil (a close run thing with Ambonnay)
2. La Romanee Conti, Domaine de la Romanee Conti
3. Leflaive Montrachet
5. Chateau Margaux
7. Stags Leap Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon
8. Chave Hermitage Rouge
9. Vega Sicilia Unico
10. Henshke Hill of Grace
there are of plenty that could have made the list, and there are plenty that would have made the list if I hadn’t already tasted them. There will be plenty who will call this a very dull list – lacking in verve, freshness and cutting edge quality – but these famous names have got where they are by being the best – against them everything else can then be fairly judged. It may well be that I then decide that, for me, there are better wines than these but at least I would no longer be guessing.
